Gmail's Help me write launched behind a paid Workspace add-on

The setup

Generative drafting inside Gmail did not arrive as a single event. Google's March 2023 announcement introduced the capability through what it called a trusted-tester program, starting with English in the United States, before any general release. The feature that shipped from that testing period needed, at first, a specific commercial add-on rather than an ordinary Gmail account, and setting it up for a company meant purchasing that add-on for the relevant users, not flipping a setting inside an existing plan.

What the documents show

Google's own Workspace Updates post from 29 August 2023 states the drafting tool, branded Help me write, was exclusive to the Duet AI for Google Workspace Enterprise add-on at general availability, and that for both admins and end users the feature would be ON by default with no admin control to turn it off. That is a vendor's own launch note, not an independent audit, but it is specific about scope: an organization without that add-on did not get the feature at all. The current Gmail help page, retrieved 16 September 2026 and now titled Draft emails with Gemini in Gmail, describes a broader gate: an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan available worldwide, or a personal Google Account limited to the United States. The tool works the same way in both versions — a prompt bar under Compose that generates a full draft or revises an existing one using options like Formalize or Shorten.

The friction

The 2023 launch note is explicit that neither an admin nor an end user could disable the feature once the add-on was purchased, so the setup decision was really a procurement decision made once for an entire organization. The current help page adds its own limitation: the system may not support every request and can generate inaccurate content, warning against relying on it for medical, legal, or financial advice — a vendor naming its own tool's boundaries rather than a third party testing them.

What changed in the work

Before this feature, composing a reply from scratch was entirely manual inside Gmail. What the documents support is narrower than a claim that AI writes your email: in 2023 it was a paid add-on capability turned on for a whole organization at once with no individual opt-out, and by the current help page it has broadened to cover more account types under the Gemini name, still gated by plan or region. Labelled as editorial, the throughline is that access, not the drafting mechanic itself, is what a team actually had to manage.

• If the feature is enabled, can any individual user turn it off, or is that an organization-wide decision?
• Is a personal account being used, and if so, does the country restriction the help page describes apply?

The rebrand from Duet AI to Gemini between these two documents is itself a small but real setup cost: the same capability now sits under a different name and a different license path than it did at launch.
