Gmail's thread summaries are click-triggered, not automatic

The setup

Gmail's Gemini features are not a single switch; Google's own article on Gemini features in Gmail lists thread summarization, branded AI Overview conversation summaries, as one line in a table of separately gated capabilities, each with its own account requirement and language list. Turning it on requires a Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription, an eligible Google Workspace plan, or, for a free personal account, being in a currently supported country, plus a separate setting: smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet must be switched on, and turning that off also disables AI-assisted writing and proofreading across the same apps.

What the documents show

A dedicated support article on catching up on email threads with AI Overview conversation summaries states the feature generates an overview at the top of a thread that synthesizes key points and replies, and separately suggests reminders for tasks that carry a due date, generated only when a person clicks Summarize this email rather than automatically on every thread opened. The features table shows summarization has broader language support than several sibling features: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, available globally for both paid AI plans and, notably, for personal Gmail accounts, unlike Help me write or Suggested Replies, which the same table restricts to US personal accounts.

The friction

Google's own article is explicit that disabling smart features to avoid thread summarization is not a targeted opt-out; it also switches off AI-assisted writing and proofreading elsewhere in Workspace, so a user cannot decline just the summarization feature in isolation. The article also carries a standing disclaimer that Gemini feature suggestions do not represent Google's views, may be inaccurate, and should not be relied on for medical, legal, or financial advice, alongside a Bad suggestion feedback button rather than a correction mechanism.

What changed in the work

The documented change is narrow and specific: a long thread now gets a synthesized overview and, when applicable, a task reminder pushed into Google Tasks or Calendar, on click rather than by default, sparing a full read of every reply to find the current state of a conversation. Neither support article claims the overview reads or summarizes attachments, so an attachment still needs opening separately. The reminder card itself persists for four days or until dismissed, a specific detail the article states rather than a vague promise of ongoing tracking.

• Does the account's eligibility, personal, Workspace, or paid AI plan, actually unlock summarization in the language the team corresponds in day to day?
• Is turning off smart features to control one Gemini behavior an acceptable trade against losing AI writing help elsewhere in the account?
• Are attachments inside a summarized thread still being opened and read, given the summary itself does not cover them?

Google's own eligibility table is more granular than a single Gemini-in-Gmail feature flag suggests, and thread summarization sits toward the more widely available end of that table rather than the most restricted. The click-to-summarize design, rather than an always-on overview, is itself a documented choice worth noting against any assumption that Gmail now summarizes every thread by default.
