Mem rebuilt itself again around a chief-of-staff style AI agent

The setup

Mem's own homepage now describes the product as two parts: 'Mem Workspace,' which 'keeps your notes, meetings, and ideas organized, connected, and easy to use,' and 'Mem Agent,' introduced as 'your AI chief of staff' that 'builds a living picture of your tasks, projects, and goals — then steps in at the right moments to keep you moving.' A chat interface sits inside that workspace rather than as a separate product, reachable from the same panel used for capturing notes, meetings, and voice memos, with a free plan available before any paid tier is needed.

What the documents show

Mem's chat feature page states in its own published FAQ that 'by default, Mem searches your entire workspace to answer questions and surface relevant context,' and that a user can 'narrow its focus using the plus button to attach specific notes or collections, or constrain by time period.' The same FAQ states Mem Chat can edit an open note live, tracked through version history, and can suggest and apply new collections to organize a workspace — the vendor's description of chat working alongside structure, not replacing it. A dated blog post from March 2026 states Mem now lets external assistants query a user's notes as context, extending where that retrieval can be invoked from beyond Mem's own interface.

The friction

None of the pages retrieved here state what Mem Chat does when no note in the workspace actually answers a question — whether it says so directly or falls back to general knowledge is not documented on the pages read on 16 September 2026. The chat FAQ also discloses that the underlying model is not fixed for most users: 'if you have no preference, or if you're on a free account, Mem Chat's model is tied to the one we currently think fits most use cases... that could, and will change as new models come out,' meaning free-tier output quality can shift without a corresponding product announcement.

What changed in the work

Finding a note changed from browsing folders or tags to asking a question across the whole workspace by default, per Mem's own documentation, with manual collections still available rather than removed. The larger shift the vendor's own homepage describes is from a notes app with search toward a 'chief of staff' that keeps a running model of a user's tasks from every capture, which is a different relationship to the tool than simply retrieving a past note on demand.

A workspace-wide default search is a real change from folder browsing, but the vendor's own pages leave the empty-result case and the free-tier model choice unspecified, which matters before relying on either.
